Rainy days in Bellagio Lake Como: what to do

If the day is gloomy or rainy, we suggest some indoor activities to enjoy between Bellagio and Como. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the cultural and culinary aspects of Lake Como’s tradition.

If the weather doesn’t cooperate, no worries — there are still plenty of useful and enjoyable things to do in Bellagio and nearby.

Staying in Bellagio just for one day?
Here’s how to plan your day

If you’d rather stay close, it’s smart to break the day into two parts:

1. Indoor Activities
– Cooking class: a fun way to stay dry and learn something new about local cuisine.
– Wine tasting: several wine bars and cellars in the area offer tastings, and you won’t need to go far.
Click here to view the indoor experiences I’ve selected  for you.

2. Explore the lake even in the rain

In the afternoon, grab an umbrella and a raincoat and hop on a covered ferry. You can take a full lake loop without getting off.

Alternatively, you can book a private boat tour on a covered boat, view the boat tours selections here.

If you are on Lake Como, just to relax and admire the views, you can stroll around and do some shopping in the local shops or you can stop by a café or pastry shop for a warm drink and a treat. If you would like to drink something admiring the Lake you can choose: Terrace Bar at Villa Serbelloni or the bar at the Il Perlo Panorama hotel.

Staying for a Few Days? Consider a day trip to Como or Milan

If you’re in Bellagio for more than a couple of days, it might be worth setting aside one day to visit Como or even Milan.

Como is accessible by ferry and bus. It has a nice historic center, museums, and good shopping.

Milan is a bit further but a great option: shopping, museums and restaurants.

Visit the city of Como from Bellagio

If you get a rainy day during your stay in Bellagio, it might be a good chance to take a trip to Como. It’s easy to get there by public transport (bus or boat), and there are plenty of things to do indoors.

First stop: the Como Cathedral (Duomo). It’s one of the most important churches in Lombardy and really impressive — the marble facade and details are beautiful. Inside, it’s spacious and full of artwork, stained glass, and centuries of history. Even if you’re not usually into churches, it’s worth seeing.

If you’re into food, there are some great food tours, or you can just find a good restaurant and try some local dishes. The food scene in Como is solid, with lots of traditional flavors.

Como’s also great for a bit of shopping. You’ll find boutiques, local artisan shops, and plenty of spots to pick up unique gifts or clothing.

For something cultural, check out the Silk Museum. Como is famous for silk production, and this small museum gives you a quick and interesting look at why.

For something cultural, check out the Tempio Voltiano, a small but interesting museum dedicated to Alessandro Volta — the inventor of the electric battery, who was born right here in Como. It’s a quick visit and perfect if you’re curious about science or local history.

Even if it’s raining, Como has a lot to offer. With a little planning, it can turn into a really enjoyable day.

Visit the city of Milan from Bellagio

If you’ve got a full day and feel like exploring beyond the lake, Milan is a great option. You can easily get there by train from Varenna (get a boat from Bellagio to Varenna and then walk up to the train station). Once you arrive, there’s a lot to see and do even if the weather isn’t perfect. First off, don’t miss the Duomo. It’s one of the most iconic buildings in Italy, and it’s seriously impressive. The outside is full of details, and if you’re up for it, you can go up to the rooftop for an amazing view over the city. If you’re into shopping or just enjoy walking through stylish areas, head to Via Montenapoleone and Via della Spiga. It’s the heart of Milan’s fashion district — full of designer stores, but also nice just for window shopping and people-watching. For art lovers, seeing The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci is a big highlight. It’s in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and you’ll need to book tickets ahead of time — they sell out fast. If you have more time, check out the Sforza Castle. It’s a big historical fortress in the city center that now hosts several museums with art, old instruments, sculptures, and more. Another great stop is the Basilica of Sant’Ambrogio, one of Milan’s oldest churches — very different from the Duomo but full of character and history. Whether you’re into fashion, art, history, or just wandering around a big Italian city, Milan has something for everyone. It’s fast-paced and modern but full of culture too. Perfect for a full-day trip from the lake.
